In my absence on Thursday, Derek Paiva will drop by the class to talk about professional web posting.
Paiva, who is now editor of HAWAII Magazine and HawaiiMagazine.com, knows what he’s talking about.
After stints as an intern at Honolulu Magazine, and as a staff editor at Hawaii Business Magazine and Island Scene Magazine, Paiva was for seven years the entertainment reporter for the Honolulu Advertiser and its Friday magazine, TGIF. During that period, he interviewed music stars like Prince, Eddie Vedder, B.B. King, Kanye West, The Strokes, Pink and Rihanna. He also reviewed concerts, nightclubs and bars as a nightlife writer.
In December, 2007, he left the Advertiser to become online editor for HawaiiMagazine.com. The site was redesigned in January, 2008, and in less than three years, grew from 6,000 pageviews a month to more than 400,000. All of the site’s content is listed on Google News and has been quoted by the Los Angeles Times and the London Daily Mail.
Derek is perhaps the most successful online editor in Hawaii at building a site through content alone, though he also used social media like Picasa, Facebook and Twitter.
In December 2010, he assumed the editorship of the print magazine as well. If you’d like to see his work, he’s provided a list of links: Paiva Web Links
